MLS playoff clinchers and eliminators (Edition 2)
Down to the final 2 weeks of the 2008 Major League Soccer season. We see Columbus secure the Supporter's Shield as Houston could not get a better result than Columbus. Los Angeles Galaxy revived their playoff chances with a win over Colorado Rapids. There are still no teams eliminated from playoffs. Well, lets just head right into the clinchers and possible mathematical eliminated teams for the following week.
Columbus Crew - 54 pts - 28 games played (GP) (East 1st):
Supporter's Sheild clinched, which includes East 1st seed clinched.
Houston Dynamo - 44 pts - 27 GP (West 1st):
West 2nd seed clinched. They have 2 games as they have the make-up game vs San Jose in mid-week and a game against the Galaxy on the weekend.
To clinch 1st seed:
Win both (6 pts) - Too far ahead of Chivas
Win one, draw other (4 pts) - CHV draw or loss.
Win one, lose other (3 pts) - CHV draw or loss.
Draw both (2 pts) - CHV loss
If HOU has a 3 point lead over CHV after the weekend, HOU has a 9 goal-differential lead. So, Houston would still be in good position.
Chicago Fire - 43 pts - 28 GP (East 2nd),
New England Revolution - 43 pts - 28 GP (East 3rd):
Both clinched East 3rd seed, which includes playoff berth. CHI and NE are confirmed to be a matchup in the first round of the playoffs. The rest of the season will just be a play to home field advantage, and Chicago owns the tiebreaker.
CHI can clinch 2nd seed, home field matchup against NE in the first round with:
CHI win and NE loss.
Real Salt Lake - 36 pts - 28 GP (West 3rd):
To clinch West 3rd seed:
Win - gives FCD a loss, COL draw or loss (SJ could tie RSL, but RSL would take the tiebreaker).
Kansas City Wizards - 36 pts - 28 GP (East 4th):
To clinch playoffs:
Win - 2 of the following scenarios need to happen: NY loss, FCD loss, COL draw or loss, DC draw or loss.
New York Red Bulls - 36 pts - 28 GP (East 5th):
To clinch playoffs:
Win - (FCD loss OR RSL loss) AND COL draw or loss AND DC draw or loss
FC Dallas - 35 pts - 28 GP (West 4th):
To be mathematically eliminated:
Loss - Gives RSL a win. KC win AND NY win.
Colorado Rapids - 34 pts - 28 GP (West 5th):
To be mathematically eliminated:
Draw - RSL win AND KC win AND NY win.
Loss - (FCD win OR RSL win) AND KC win AND NY win.
DC United - 34 pts - 28 GP (East 6th):
To be mathematically eliminated:
Draw or Loss - KC win AND NY win.
Toronto FC - 32 pts - 28 GP (East 7th),
Los Angeles Galaxy - 32 pts - 28 GP (West 6th):
To be mathematically eliminated:
Loss
Draw - 2 of the following scenarios happen: KC draw or win, NY draw or win, DC win, FCD win (RSL vs COL in the last week will make one of these teams out of reach for TFC).
Win - (FCD win OR RSL win (Only RSL win will mathematically eliminate LA)) AND KC win AND NY win.
San Jose Earthquakes - 30 pts - 27 GP (West 7th):
2 games this week. Make-up vs Houston.
To be mathematically eliminated:
Loss & Loss (0 pts) or Loss & Draw (1 pts) or Draw & Draw (2 pts) Win (HOU) & Loss (KC) (3 pts).
Loss (HOU) & Win (KC) (3 pts) - 2 of the following happen: NY win, FCD win, COL win, DC win.
Win & Draw (4 pts) - NY win AND FCD win AND COL win (RSL vs COL will make one team out of reach for SJ).
To point out. If RSL, NY, and KC all win, while COL and DC both draw or lose, the 8 teams in the playoffs will be set.
